Short Break Holidays from Reading: Shropshire and the Marches

Leaving Thursday 22 July 2010 for 5 days / 4 nights.

Come with us to see the stunning countryside, historic towns, villages and attractions that make Shropshire and the Welsh Marches such a wonderful part of Britain. This is a leisurely holiday, with a mix of attractions and time to explore at your own pace in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

The hotel

We'll be staying at the Menzies Stourport Manor Hotel, country-house based 4-star hotel in the historic Georgian town of Stourport-on-Severn. All rooms have en suite facilities as well as tea and coffee facilities. The hotel features a health and leisure club and restaurant.

Iitinerary

Day 1 - Cotswolds and Severn
The holiday starts as we leave the Reading area and take a leisurely drive to Burford, famous for its picturesque main street with tearooms and interesting shops. After our morning coffee stop there, we head off through the Cotswolds on to Tewkesbury, situated at the meeting of the Severn and Avon rivers. There'll be time to explore its half-timbered buildings, carved doorways, narrow medieval alleys and the magnificent abbey before heading on to our hotel, arriving in time for you to unwind before dinner

Day 2 - Castle and Capital
Magnificent scenery and reminders of the turbulent history of the Marches are our themes today. The morning is spent in Stokesay Castle, a fine preserved fortified medieval manor house, with a timber-framed gatehouse and parish church. We'll give you time to enjoy this quiet medieval jewel and have lunch before the short journey to Ludlow. This hilltop town was once the effective capital of Wales, as the Council of Wales was held in the castle, and it was full of clerks, lawyers and messengers. This all ended in the 17th Century, today the town has 500 listed buildings, is noted for gastronomy and one of the oldest shops in the country.

Day 3 - Books and Wells
We visit two more counties of the Marches today. In Herefordshire is Hay-on-Wye, a book lover's paradise as well as an attractive hillside town. You can browse the bookstores before having an early lunch. Powys in Wales and Llandrindod Wells is our destination for the afternoon. The town developed as a result of the healing qualities of the local water and there are many ornate buildings from Victorian and Edwardian times. The National Cycle Museum is based here. Needless to say, magnificent scenery features in all our journeys today.

Day 4 - Bridge and Town
The peace of the Marches countryside was disturbed in the 18th century by the birth-pangs of the Industrial Revolution, which changed the world. Our morning is spent in Ironbridge, which has developed around the famous bridge across the Severn Valley. Then we're off to Blists Hill Victorian town to experience Victorian life first hand! Your first visit should be to the bank to exchange decimal currency for proper pennies to spend in the town, maybe in the grocer's, bakery, sweetshop or you may want to see the chemist, draper and outfitter, or the pub or Post Office or fish and chip shop. This really is a treat.

Day 5 - Wool and Regency
'The Town in the Marches' is how the historic wool town of Leominster is described. Located in the heart of the beautiful border countryside it's a great place for a browse and morning coffee. Regency Cheltenham is where we stop for lunch. This spa town has been attracting visitors since the 18th century to sample the spa water. Whether you like the taste or not, the town has plenty to see and it rounds off our holiday in style.
